It's so easy being green!

Saturday was Earth day and I had the pleasure of seeing Dr. David Suzuki do a keynote speech on Climate Change. It's amazing how passionate he is about changing our world for the better and he is committed to educating people on the importance of the changes that need to be made immediately.

I have signed up for the Nature Challenge and I urge you to do the same!

Take a look at what the Ontario government is doing to help...it's a small, but effective step in the right direction!

McGuinty Government To Ban Inefficient Light Bulbs By 2012

Switch To Efficient Lights, Summer Programs Will Help Ontarians Save Electricity And Money, And Protect The Environment

TORONTO, April 18 /CNW/ - Ontario is banning the sale of inefficient light bulbs by 2012 and launching five province-wide conservation initiatives as part of the government's commitment to build a conservation culture, Energy Minister Dwight Duncan and Environment Minister Laurel Broten announced today.

"It's lights out for old, inefficient bulbs in Ontario," Duncan said. "By making this one small change, we can all make an enormous difference in the way we use electricity."

New efficient lighting such as compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) use around 75 per cent less electricity than standard old fashioned incandescent bulbs. Replacing all 87 million incandescent bulbs in Ontario households with CFLs would save six million megawatt hours annually - enough to power 600,000 homes.

"Together, Ontarians can - and will - do their part to fight climate change starting with something as simple as changing a light bulb," said Broten. "This is an important day for Ontario's environment - this action alone represents a huge step forward in reducing greenhouse gas emissions - it's the equivalent of taking 250,000 cars off the road."

The Ministry of Energy will meet with industry, US regulators, and federal and provincial governments to develop new performance standards for lamps and to draft regulations to ban the sale of inefficient lighting by 2012 where alternatives exist in the market. In addition, as of today, the government will only purchase energy efficient light bulbs for its own buildings.

"We support the government's initiative to improve the efficiency of all lighting," said Elyse Allan, President and CEO of GE Canada which has a lamp manufacturing plant in Oakville. "By encouraging the use of high efficiency lighting, at home and at work, all of us will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions."

"Friends of the Earth congratulates the McGuinty government on their important decision to ban inefficient lighting," said Beatrice Olivastri, CEO, Friends of the Earth Canada. "A regulation for the ban plus their commitment to immediately cease provincial government's purchases of out-dated bulbs is a recipe for success - good for energy conservation and good for fighting climate change."

Today also marks the launch of five innovative energy conservation programs for summer 2007 that will give Ontarians the tools they need to save energy, money, and the environment:

- Every Kilowatt Counts - a coupon and incentive brochure being mailed to every household in Ontario. The program provides coupons for CFL bulbs, ceiling fans, timers and other energy-saving devices.
- Cool Savings Rebate Program - provides rebates for central air conditioner tune-ups and for the installation of energy-efficient central air conditioning systems and programmable thermostats.
- Great Refrigerator Roundup - will help take old, inefficient fridges out of service. Every 1,000 refrigerators retired will save enough electricity to power more than 130 homes.
- Summer Savings - offers residential and small business consumers an incentive for reducing power use: cutting use by 10 per cent during a set period gives consumers an additional 10 percent rebate on their electricity bills.
- Peaksaver - a voluntary program that allows local distribution companies to remotely cycle down central air conditioners, water heaters and pool pumps when the electricity system is stretched.

"These five programs show that conserving electricity can be easy," said Peter Love, Ontario's Chief Energy Conservation Officer. "Consumers begin saving money immediately, both on the products they purchase and by reducing electricity costs."

Since 2003, the province has made available up to $2 billion for energy efficiency and conservation programs. The summer 2007 conservation programs are just the latest conservation initiatives introduced by the McGuinty government. Others include:
- A commitment to reduce Ontario's projected peak electricity demand by five percent, and the government's own electricity use by 10 percent, by the end of 2007.
- Increasing the range of products covered by Ontario's Energy Efficiency Act to save Ontarians money and encourage energy conservation.
- Legislating improvements to the Ontario Building Code to give it the toughest energy-efficiency standards of any building code in the country.
- Providing over $14 million to support low Income conservation programs including projects with the Social Services Housing Corporation, the Energy Efficiency Assistance for Social Housing Program and the Affordable Housing Energy Efficiency Program - Supporting a wide range of incentive programs including the Every Kilowatt Counts Program that distributed over 2.8 million CFLs in 2006.
- Providing $1.5 million to Project Porchlight to deliver compact florescent light bulbs to communities across Ontario.

"Taken together, these programs represent the largest coordinated effort Ontario has ever made to conserve electricity," said Duncan. "We're working with Ontarians to build a culture of conservation that will help ensure our province has the power it needs to grow and prosper now and long into the future."

What were you doing Saturday night?
gidget: Well, if you are not 14, you most likely were out doing something fun. So, just in case you missed SNL, you should check out the video of Bjork's performance. Earth Intruders and Wanderlust are so great!

See, wasn't i right?
Jem: you are so right, Gidget! I NEVER watch SNL...but I did manage to stomach about 40 minutes of the show on Saturday...and Bjork was really good! I loved Earth Intruders...and she just looked so lovely.

Apartment hunting is stressful!!!

Jem: So, I've been on the lookout for a new place to live as of June 1st. It is completely stressing me out! Everywhere is either a dump, too expensive, or not downtown...I just moved downtown; I'm not leaving now!
To top it all off, I have to get a place by myself. I'm excited/nervous about living alone. I've never done it before. I mean, I'm not 25 anymore and I still feel nervous sleeping in a place alone...I guess there's only one way to fix that!
And, to make matters worse, my BFF, Gidget is leaving town forever at the end of this month...what am I going to do without her? It's so not my favorite when we live in different cities...and now we'll be on different continents...it's so not right. Of course, I'm crazy-excited about her going off to live a life of adventure but not without me...
Anyway, things will be fine...I'm just going to miss my movie soulmate, that's all.
Ok...enough of being a downer. I mean, I can find the positive aspects to everything...
For instance, it'll be great to live alone...I can decorate any way I want and I won't have a
roommate to get mad at for NEVER cleaning the bathroom...he knows who he is.
And, it's not easy finding the silver lining about Gidget leaving. I guess it'll force me to make new friends and meet new people; always a good thing to do but I've been really lazy about this...

Who needs to be responsible when it is so fun to be irresponsible?

gidget: So i had a ticket for the Interpol show last night. i was thinking that i should stay home, not go out. i have packing to do. i have readings to do. i need to edit my paper. So many things a responsible person would take care of before going out to see Interpol perform. Oh, and did i mention i really should not have purchased the ticket in the first place 'cause my VISA is full enough? but i really really love Interpol, so it can be forgiven right? Well, i left it to the universe. i asked two people who did not get tickets if they wanted to purchase my ticket. Yes, i only told them the day of. And yes, i was only able to leave messages for them. But, if the universe wanted me to be responsible it would have had one of them contact me, and they didn't. It would be silly to miss the show! So, i went.
Thank-u universe. I forgot how much i loved them! i knew i loved them, but i forgot that i love love loved them. you understand the difference, right? as soon as they stepped on stage i was all giddy. The new songs were amazing!!!! I can not wait till the new album comes out. Here is a video someone uploaded on you tube. Quality is not good, but at least you can sorta hear one of the new songs.

Carlos D has shorter hair and a mustache. He has got the whole Doc Holiday sort thing going on. It works on him. The thing about Carlos is he isn't attractive in photos per se, but in person he is crazy sexy. But i wasn't there to look at boys, i was there to listen to the music. Ok, one more side note....when Paul sings Stella Was a diver... and calls out "Stella. Stella. oh Stella. Stella i love you Stella i love Stella i love you" it makes me weak in the knees. man just thinking about it makes me swoon a little. Don't believe me? Check out an old clip of Interpol performing.

So you see, sometimes it pays to just forget about all things you 'should' be doing and just go see interpol instead.

is this reality?gidget: so much seems to be coming fromm the reality tv world i can't help but comment on it. First things first, Lauren (from The Hills) has come out and said that no sex tape was made of her and Jason. Let's all hold hands together and pray that this is true.
Ok, i have to admit that i am enjoying ABC's Dancing With The Stars this season. Ian Ziering is so adorable on it. I am hoping to see Brandon, Dylan, and Kelly in the audience cheering Steve on. OMG! That would just be so amazing. go ian go!
I don't watch American Idol, but i am beginning to love that Sanjaya kid. For one thing, he has got a great smile and presence on screen. You know, he just seems like a nice guy. Most importantly, he doesn't vocally assault my ears. I think a growing portion of the public is just damn sick of everyone trying to be Mariah with their vocal gymnastics. Just sing the gdamn song, and stop yelling it at me! We already got one Mariah, and she is great, and we don't need another. Anyway, go Sanjaya. American Idol is funny.

but if you thought American Idol was funny, you should check out France's version.

Man, i haven't seen anything this funny in a long time! the way the guy pronounces virgin is just killer. You know, it starts good enough, but goes so terrible terribly wrong at the end. Well, the very last note makes me giggle. BUT, the dude obviously forgot the lyrics! Uh, why does he repeat the first verse of Like A Virgin twice? not to be the Madonna police or anything, but the second verse really is fabulous and adds depth to the song. that's it, i take it back....this guy sucks. If you are going to sing Madonna, get it right!
France's stage is nice. Much better than the American Idol one.

Will they ever learn?gidget: gossip is swirling over the idea that Jason Wahler (from Laguna and The Hills fame) has a sex tape staring himself and former gf LC (from the hills). Ewwww. He is reportedly attempting to sell the tape. No doubt this is because of all the legal bills he has to pay. He has been arrested multiple times during the past two years, what a bada**.
Why are girls in Lala land so dumb? Listen girls, never ever ever make a sex tape with your bf! Even if you do not think you will ever be famous, it will end up on the Internet. keep your private life private, and shut your freakin' cameras off. You aren't as hot as you think you are!

You may think The Hills gossip would end with talk of a possible sex tape, but oh on, there is more. Reportedly Heidi (LC's former BFF) has gotten breast implants. At least that is what US weekly is reporting, and you know they are reliable. Just soyou know she has been wanting them for a while. She thought long and hard about it. And you know, she totally did it for herself. girl power!

making the world a better place
gidget: apparently Vanity Fair feels that the only way people will give a hoot about the environment is if they put supposedly handsome men on the cover of it's magazine. You may recall that last years 'Green Issue' featured a Mr. George Clooney on the cover (along with other celebs). Well, lucky for us, VF came to realize that cute animals are always better than aging celebrities. Check out the cutest polar cub you have ever seen. Oh, and whatshismaname is there too. And yes, i realize that baby simba (aka leo d) has been a champion of the environment for a long time. But, seriously, do i really care what some Hollywood celeb has to say about the current Global Warming crisis. Ah no. Do i care how cute a polar bear cub is? Hells yes!

Bjork has revealed the cover art to her next album, Volta. The great thing about Bjork is that everything that is related to her music expresses the mood of her current album. One may recall how perfectly the cover to Vespertine or Medulla were for the respective albums. I love how different the cover is for Volta. Bright and full of colour and surprise. I can not wait to hear the album!!!
